The Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario (FSRA) is the provincial regulator responsible for overseeing mortgage brokers and brokerages in Ontario under the Mortgage Brokerages, Lenders and Administrators Act (MBLAA). FSRA regularly hosts information sessions and town halls for the mortgage brokering community — events where brokers can get direct information from the regulator rather than through secondhand summaries.
These sessions have increased in frequency since FSRA transitioned from FSCO (Financial Services Commission of Ontario) in 2019. FSRA's mandate includes a more principles-based approach to regulation compared to its predecessor, and the information sessions reflect this: rather than simply announcing rule changes, FSRA staff often facilitate Q&A discussions where brokers can ask about specific compliance scenarios.
Topics covered in recent FSRA information sessions have included: the renewal of MBLAA licensing requirements, the treatment of referral fees under OSFI and provincial rules, the new mandatory suitability framework for mortgage recommendations, renewal of principal broker designations, and FSRA's approach to enforcement actions.
For Ontario brokers, these sessions carry practical importance beyond simply staying informed. FSRA has indicated that proactive engagement with regulatory guidance — including attendance at information sessions — is a positive factor in any compliance review. FSRA also uses these sessions to preview upcoming policy consultations, giving brokers early warning of proposed changes.
Registration for FSRA information sessions is free and open to all Ontario-licensed mortgage professionals. Sessions are announced on the FSRA website and typically promoted through the major Ontario brokerage networks and association newsletters (IMBA, CAAMP/MPC provincial chapter).
Brokers outside Ontario should check their provincial regulator's website for equivalent sessions: BCFSA in BC, RECA in Alberta, FCNB in New Brunswick, and so on.
